How to use the Team Generator
Paste your list of names — one per line — then choose how many teams you want (2 to 6). Press Generate Teams and the people are randomly distributed into colour-coded teams. Press again for a completely different split.
Teams are as equal in size as possible. If 10 people split into 3 teams, you get two teams of 3 and one team of 4.
When random teams are the fairest option
Letting people self-select teams always produces imbalanced results — friends group together, skill levels cluster, and someone ends up feeling like a last pick. Random assignment sidesteps all of that:
- →Sports and PE — random teams for pickup games means no captains, no awkward picking order.
- →Classroom group projects— forces students to work with people they wouldn't normally choose, which is often where the best learning happens.
- →Team building events— mix departments and seniority levels so people meet colleagues they don't normally work with.
- →Game nights — split your friend group into teams for trivia, board games, or any competitive activity.
Other ways to split groups
If you just need a random order (not teams), use the List Randomizer. To pick one person at a time without repeats, use the Name Picker.
